Fifth Grade

fifth gradeFifth grade is an exciting year for Cynthia Heights’ students! The year is filled with a variety of academic and extracurricular activities. Students may participate in Spell Bowl, Math Bowl, Chess Club, basketball, volleyball, fire wardens, spelling bee, safety patrol, Science Fair, and Recycling team. All fifth graders participate in the DARE program, sponsored by the Vanderburgh County Sherriff’s Department.

They read for Book Bucks to be spent at a Big PTA Celebration of Reading, where teachers dress up as favorite storybook characters!

During their fifth-grade year, students study American history from the first Americans to the founding of the United States. They are taught the Indiana Math Standards with emphasis on developing problem-solving skills. Students continue writing creatively, utilizing Write Traits skills, and learning how to use “Four Square” as a graphic organizer. They write persuasive pieces, demonstrative pieces, research topics, reflective pieces, and expository pieces using the five-step writing process.

The final activity of the school year is our Recognition Assembly, which honors students for their many accomplishments throughout the year. Students are recognized for academic achievement, athletic abilities, school services, citizenship, and a variety of other honors. During this assembly one worthy student is awarded our prestigious Linda Trautvetter Integrity Award. This assembly provides reflective closure for an exciting school year. The students leave Cynthia Heights prepared for the challenges of Middle School!
