Third Grade

third gradeThird grade is a year of tremendous growth and maturity. Students begin to use cursive handwriting, learn multiplication facts, and become more responsible for independent study skills. Social studies, science, and health become evaluated components of the curriculum. Third graders concentrate on the study of our local history as well as global awareness

In language arts, students are exposed to many genre of literature. Teachers use a variety of reading materials to teach reading and comprehension strategies. Reading skills are supported by classroom instruction, independent reading, and the school-wide Book Bucks program. Teachers also use a wide variety of other teaching methodologies, including the 4-Square Method and Write Traits to integrate language arts throughout the curriculum

Math lessons in third grade are based on the Indiana Academic State Standards. Teachers utilize many teaching modalities. Writing is also an integral part of math. The students keep a math journal to show their understanding of math concepts. These journals are assessed using a rubric scoring system. Students regularly use manipulatives, hands-on activities, and problem-solving strategies to reinforce their understanding of math concepts.

Third-grade teachers believe in strong home/school communication. We welcome parent participation in school projects and extracurricular activities!
