We have fun in kindergarten! We eagerly learn reading readiness skills, phonics, writing, math skills, science and social studies. We also participate in vocal music, art, and physical education classes.

We learn to read as our teacher uses the Building Blocks method to teach phonics, word building and the writing process. We learn to write original stories in our journals, and we compose many classroom books using the Four-Square Writing Method. During the last nine weeks of school, we “leap” into independent reading and writing activities, and we read Accelerated Readers to our fifth-grade study buddies.

We use the hands-on approach in math with Math Their Way to supplement our math curriculum. Using a variety of manipulatives, we learn to sort, graph, measure, add and subtract. Learning math concepts is a fun thing to do in kindergarten!

We also love to learn about our world as we study social studies and science. We learn to be good citizens, to follow rules and to be good helpers. In November we celebrate the pilgrims coming to America during our annual Thanksgiving feast. Each spring we celebrate life as we watch the metamorphosis of caterpillars changing to butterflies, tadpoles growing into frogs, and sprouts growing from seeds. Kindergarten science and social studies standards are brought to life through authentic experiences.

The goal of a developmentally appropriate kindergarten is to accept all children where they are and take them forward on their literacy journey.
